Camping

Camping is the heart of Troop 28: a weekend campout most months, and a week at Camp Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan each summer.

Campouts are subsidized. Families pay a small fee for food and the site. Nobody stays home because of cost (financial help).

What to pack

You do not need to own gear to start. The Troop has tents for weekend campouts, so don’t buy one. Label everything with your name. A headlamp and hiking boots are the two purchases most worth making. Anything a trip needs beyond that will be listed on the sign-up sheet.

Medical forms

  • Every overnight: medical forms A and B, once a year, for Scouts and any adult who attends. No doctor visit. Attach a copy of the insurance card.
  • Summer camp and any trip of 72 hours or more: add form C, signed by a doctor within the past 12 months. The annual physical is the easy time to do it.

Summer camp at Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan

A week of swimming, sailing, climbing, and merit badges that are hard to finish at home. Optional and subsidized. Programs and badge lists are on the camp site.

High adventure

Scouts 13 and up can join a week-long trip in the summer. Past Troop trips: sailing on Lake Superior, canoeing the Boundary Waters, and a multi-sport week at Summit Bechtel Reserve. Spots at Northern Tier, Florida Sea Base, Summit Bechtel, and Philmont depend on Scout interest and adult leaders. Bring form C, plus any extra medical forms the program requires.
