Glencoe Boy Scouts have been serving our community since 1912 when one of the earliest American scout troops was formed.
Today, our scouts are active serving community agencies through troop and Eagle Service projects. in the last few years, some of our activities have included:
- Building planting frames for Glencoe Community Garden
- Providing military veterans bananas at the start of the annual Chicago Ruck March raising awareness of veteran suicide an PTSD
- Participating in the annual Village of Glencoe Memorial Day remembrance and Fourth of July Parade
- Helping New Trier Township Food Pantry relocate a room full of canned goods after the fire in township offices
- Making sandwiches for participants at Connections for the Homeless
- Laying Christmas wreaths at a local cemetery as part of the annual Wreaths Across America program
- Clearing buckthorn in the Cook County Forest Preserves by Skokie Lagoons in conjunction with Backyard Nature Center and Little House of Glencoe
- Donating Hanukkah candles through The Ark Chicago
- Donating spaghetti dinner meal kits, gift cards, Hanukkah candles, and Christmas wreaths to clients of Family Service of Glencoe
- Picking up litter as part of Glencoe Beach Clean-up Day
- Contributing to our chartering organization, St. Elisabeth’s Episcopal Church as well as other hosts including Glencoe Union Church and Northshore United Methodist Church
Troop 28 has celebrated the accomplishments of seven new Eagle Scouts since 2018, with several more nearing completion of their Eagle journeys. Their leadership has allowed scouts and adult volunteers to:
- Regrade and resurface the driveway; clear and split wood to fill a newly built wood storage shed; expanded the usable camping and recreation space; build a stone firepit; and replace and repair exterior walls, doors, and windows at Little House of Glencoe
- Lay mulch paths, improve drainage, and create raised beds at Glencoe Community Garden
- Repaint and restore furniture for Northshore United Methodist Church
- Rebuild a fence, and build raised planting beds and picnic tables for the Community Garden at Imagine Englewood If…
- Build picnic tables and gardens for the Glencoe Historical Society
- Repair a wall and gardens for the Glencoe Park District
Our annual Spaghetti Dinner is Troop 28’s contribution to the nationwide BSA Scouting for Food initiative. While traditionally a popular community sit-down dinner, Troop 28 pivoted in 2021 to provide gourmet meal kits and set a troop record for funds raised. Thanks to the generosity of our community, troop was able to donate over $5,000 in food and cash donations to:
- New Trier Township Food Pantry
- Family Service of Glencoe
- Uptown Cafe
- Niles Food Pantry
- Connections for the Homeless
- Am Shalom’s Fanchon Simons Help the Hungry
