Citizenship in the Community is a great Eagle-required badge for younger scouts to start on. It's a way to learn about our local community and also to get practice “doing a good turn.”
Below are some resources for completing some of these requirements in Glencoe:
Update: June 2020. During coronavirus-prompted social distancing, most local government meetings are being held virtually and streamed; consequently, most Citizenship in the Community counselors will accept attendance at a virtual meeting to meet this requirement. Please check with your counselor to see if they require you to view a livestream, or if watching a recorded session will be acceptable.
In the Glencoe area, nearly all local government meetings take place the 2nd and 3rd week of each calendar month. Oftentimes summer and or December meetings are cancelled due to lack of activity. If you are planning on completing this badge to receive your award at an upcoming Court of Honor, please keep this in mind when looking for appropriate meetings.
Many trustee meetings are recorded; however, recordings may not be available for 2-3 weeks following the meetings. Some counselors may accept video or streamed attendance. Some may accept committee or taskforce/commission meetings. Some strongly prefer Village Trustee meetings. Please check with your counselor in advance so you are not surprised.
You are encouraged to review the agendas of the meetings in advance so you are aware of the topics being discussed at the meeting you have chosen. If choosing a school district, scouts are encouraged to pick the one that is responsible for their current school. Here are the sites for our local government:
